AI Referral Tracking
AI assistants already send visitors to your site. Most analytics accounts file them under referral or direct, where nobody looks. We separate that traffic in GA4 and tie it to inquiries and revenue, so you know what AI is worth to you.

What is AI referral traffic?
It is the visits that arrive when someone clicks a link in an AI answer. In our audit of 719 B2B companies only 9% actively measured it, and another 42% could see AI traffic in their analytics but could not separate it from everything else.
What GA4 does and does not show by default
A new default channel. Google Analytics now has an AI Assistant channel for visits from sources like ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Copilot and Grok.
AI Overviews are not in it. Google counts clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode as Organic Search, so they cannot be separated this way.
Some assistants are missed. An assistant not on Google's list lands in Referral, so we add a custom channel group to catch them.
Some visits lose their referrer. Copied links and app traffic arrive with no source and show up as Direct.
No questions are shared. Analytics never shows the question the visitor asked, only where they came from and what they did.
You cannot improve what you do not count.
Without tracking, AI visibility is judged on screenshots and guesses. With it, you can see which assistants send visitors, which pages they land on and whether those visitors inquire or buy.
Counted in inquiries, not just sessions.
AI visitors often arrive later in their research and better informed. We make sure their inquiries and sales are attributed, so the channel is judged on revenue.
Tracking is set up as standard in our AI SEO services, and can be done on its own.

Where AI traffic currently lands in your GA4, how much of it there is and which conversions are tracked.
AI channel group
A custom channel group that catches every major assistant, placed so it is not swallowed by Referral.
Key events that count
Inquiries, calls and purchases tracked as key events, so AI visits can be judged on outcomes.
CRM attribution
AI-sourced leads carried into your CRM, so sales can see where a deal started.
"How did you hear about us?"
An optional form field that captures AI-influenced inquiries analytics cannot see.
Looker Studio dashboard
AI traffic, landing pages, inquiries and revenue by assistant, next to organic and paid.
Quarterly referrer review
New assistants and changed domains added, so the numbers stay complete.

Why the default AI Assistant channel is not enough on its own.
Google's channel is a good start. It is not the whole picture.
What it does well
It is built in, needs no set-up and is maintained by Google, so the main assistants are counted from the start.
Where it falls short
It only covers the sources on Google's list, it cannot be edited, and it excludes AI Overviews and AI Mode by design.
What we add
A custom channel group that catches every assistant your visitors use, explorations that compare AI visitors with organic and paid, and conversion tracking that follows them through to revenue.
Why AI traffic is undercounted.
The gaps we find most often.
Visits from assistants not on Google's list sit in a long referral list nobody reads.
Lost referrers
Links copied from an answer or opened in an app arrive as Direct.
AI Overviews hidden in Organic
Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted with ordinary search clicks.
No outcomes tracked
Sessions are counted, but inquiries and sales are not linked to them.
Out-of-date rules
A regex written once and never updated as assistants change domains.
Linking AI mentions to AI traffic.
Analytics shows the visits. It does not show the answers that never produced a click. We pair your GA4 data with monthly tracking of whether assistants name you, so you can see whether more mentions are turning into more visits and inquiries, or whether the answers are naming you without sending anyone.
If you are not being named yet, start with an AI SEO program or our audit.

Tracking tells you whether AI search work is paying off.
Once AI traffic is visible you can judge the rest of the work on results: AI SEO, SEO for ChatGPT and ChatGPT Ads all report into the same numbers.
“Their team understood our business before we even had to explain it. Inquiries are up 250% and the quality is better than ever.”
How to become the answer, chapter by chapter.
AI tools now answer questions instead of listing websites. This guide explains how to get your business included in those answers, from crawl access to measurement.

Does traffic from ChatGPT show up in Google Analytics 4?
Yes. GA4 has a default AI Assistant channel for visits from sources such as ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Copilot and Grok. Visits whose referrer is lost, such as copied links, still show as Direct.
Why do I still need a custom channel group?
The default AI Assistant channel only covers the sources on Google's list and cannot be edited. A custom channel group catches every assistant your visitors use and lets you compare them side by side.
Can GA4 separate Google AI Overviews clicks?
No. Google counts clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode as Organic Search. We report them through Search Console data and tracked questions instead.
Can I see which question the visitor asked?
No. Analytics shows where a visitor came from and what they did, never the question they asked the assistant. We pair your traffic data with monthly tracking of the questions your buyers ask.
Why is my AI traffic so small?
Partly because it is still a young channel, and partly because some of it is counted as Direct or Organic. Small numbers can still be valuable if those visitors inquire at a higher rate, which is why we track outcomes as well as sessions.
Should I use UTM parameters for AI traffic?
You cannot add UTMs to links an assistant writes itself. You can add them to links you control, such as in ChatGPT Ads or shared resources, and we set those up where they apply.
Is AI referral traffic the same as AI crawler traffic?
No. Crawler traffic is bots reading your pages, which analytics usually filters out. Referral traffic is people clicking through from an answer. We track crawlers separately in your server logs.
How often should the tracking be updated?
We review it each quarter. New assistants appear and existing ones change domains, and an out-of-date list quietly undercounts.
