What is AEO (answer engine optimization)?
Answer engine optimization (AEO), spelt answer engine optimisation in Australia and the UK, is the work of making your pages the ones an answer engine quotes or links when it answers a question directly, instead of only competing for a position in a list of links. An answer engine is any search or AI tool that writes the answer itself and shows its sources: Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, featured snippets, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude. This guide explains how those tools pick what to quote, how AEO fits with SEO and GEO, what to fix first and how to measure it.
What is answer engine optimisation?
An answer engine reads a handful of pages and writes one answer, showing the pages it used as links or footnotes. AEO is the work of becoming one of those pages for the questions your buyers ask.
The most familiar answer engine is Google's featured snippet, a box where the descriptive snippet comes before the page. Google says its systems decide whether a page would make a good featured snippet, you cannot mark a page as one yourself, and a click usually takes the reader to the section the snippet came from.
AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Claude extend the same idea: the tool answers and the sources sit beside or under the answer. Google itself describes Answer Engine Optimization and Generative Engine Optimization as terms that are "common online", which is fair: AEO is a label for a shift in what you optimise for, not an official discipline, and you will see it spelt both ways.
How answer engines choose what to quote
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google says these features are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems and use retrieval-augmented generation, also called grounding: the normal ranking systems retrieve relevant, current pages from the Search index, the model reviews what they say, and the response shows clickable links to the pages that support it.
Google also uses query fan-out, generating a set of related searches at once to gather more material. Its example is "how to fix a lawn that's full of weeds", which might fan out into "best herbicides for lawns", "remove weeds without chemicals" and "how to prevent weeds in lawn". AI Overviews only appear when Google's systems judge they add something beyond the classic results, so for many queries they never show.
ChatGPT search. OpenAI says ChatGPT may search the web automatically when a question would benefit from current information, and that with a search partner it typically rewrites the question into one or more targeted queries, and may send more specific follow-ups after reviewing the first results. It also warns that citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect, and that placement is not guaranteed.
Perplexity and Claude. Each runs its own search crawler, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot, to find pages for its answers. The lesson: you are competing for the cluster of smaller questions behind a buyer's question, not one keyword, and a page has to be crawlable and indexed by each engine's search systems before it can be quoted.
Why AEO matters for your business
Google said in May 2025 that since AI Overviews launched people have been asking more complex, longer and multimodal questions, and that in its biggest markets, the US and India, AI Overviews was driving over a 10% increase in Google usage for the types of queries that show them. The same announcement began rolling AI Mode out in the US.
Outside Google, ChatGPT's web search is available on its Free and paid plans and to people who are not signed in (as of October 2026), so a buyer can shortlist suppliers without seeing a results page. If the answer quotes a competitor and not you, you lose the job before you knew it existed.
In our State of B2B AI Visibility 2026 audit of more than 700 B2B companies, the average AI Visibility Score was 50 out of 100 and only 11% scored 70 or above, so most businesses have plenty of room to improve, and the field is still open.
AEO vs SEO vs GEO: what is actually different
Start with what is the same. Google's guide to its generative AI features says SEO best practices remain relevant because those features are built on the core Search ranking and quality systems, and warns that many "hacks" suggested under the AEO and GEO labels are not effective or supported by how Google Search works.
So AEO is not a different kind of marketing; what changes is the finish line and the scoreboard. This is the working distinction we use at Mojo Dojo, and there is no industry standard.
- SEO earns a page a position in a list of links; success is rankings and clicks.
- AEO earns a page a place as a source the answer is built from; the unit of work is the question, and success is how often you are quoted for the questions that matter.
- GEO earns your brand a mention when a buyer asks an assistant for options; it depends more on what the wider web says about you, and success is how often you are named and recommended.
In practice they stack: Google's AI features retrieve from the normal Search index, so a page that ranks for nothing is hard to quote, and AEO works best on a site already healthy for SEO. Our guide to generative engine optimisation covers the GEO side and our guide to AI SEO covers the whole picture; for a done-for-you version, our answer engine optimisation services track quoted pages question by question on top of an existing SEO programme.
The technical basics: can answer engines reach your pages?
Google's requirement is short: a page only needs to be indexed and able to appear in Google Search with a snippet to qualify as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and there are no extra technical requirements. Google's 2026 guide adds that a site must also be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console, so check that setting.
The rest of Google's checklist for AI features is ordinary SEO hygiene:
- Crawling allowed in robots.txt and by any CDN or hosting layer in front of the site.
- Important content available as text, not only inside images or video; JavaScript is fine if it is not blocked.
- Internal links to every important page, and a good page experience on every device.
- Structured data that matches the visible text on the page.
- Merchant Center and Business Profile details kept current, because AI answers can include product and local business information.
Firewalls fail silently: Perplexity publishes allow-rule instructions for Cloudflare and AWS web application firewalls, and OpenAI asks site owners to confirm that their host or content delivery network allows traffic from its published searchbot IP addresses.
Remember too that robots.txt is a request, not a lock: the Robots Exclusion Protocol was published by the IETF as a standards-track RFC, RFC 9309, in September 2022, and the standard says its rules "are not a form of access authorization".
Which AI crawlers to allow
The most common technical mistake in AEO is blocking the wrong bot. Each company documents which crawler feeds its search answers and which, if any, gathers training data.
- Google. Googlebot is the crawler for Search, and Google says robots.txt rules for Googlebot control crawling for Search, including its AI features. Google-Extended is a separate token covering Gemini training and grounding; Google says it does not affect inclusion in Google Search, so blocking it will not remove you from AI Overviews.
- OpenAI. OAI-SearchBot is the search crawler: OpenAI says sites that opt out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links. GPTBot is the training crawler, and disallowing it only signals that your content should not train OpenAI's models. A robots.txt change takes about 24 hours to reach OpenAI's search systems.
- Perplexity. PerplexityBot surfaces and links websites in Perplexity's results and, Perplexity says, is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models.
- Anthropic (Claude). ClaudeBot collects web content that may contribute to model training. Claude-SearchBot analyses content to improve the relevance and accuracy of Claude's search results, and Anthropic says disabling it may reduce a site's visibility there.
Allow the search crawlers if you want to be quoted; the training crawlers are a separate decision.
What makes a page worth quoting
Once the engines can reach you, the question is whether your page is worth lifting. Google says original, useful content that is not a commodity is likely to shape a site's presence in generative AI search over the long run more than anything else in its guide.
Google's own example: "7 Tips for First-Time Homebuyers" is commodity content, resting on common knowledge anyone could write. "Why We Waived the Inspection & Saved Money: A Look Inside the Sewer Line" is non-commodity, a first-hand expert take. A page that says what every other page says adds nothing the systems need.
For a small business that means a few habits:
- Answer from experience. Say what you have seen on real jobs. Google asks that you create content from what you know rather than recycling what a generative AI model could produce.
- Show who wrote it. Google says trust is the most important part of E-E-A-T (experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness), encourages accurate bylines with background on the author, and warns that fabricated author profiles are a form of deception and a signal of a low-quality page.
- Organise for the reader. Google says people appreciate pages organised into paragraphs and sections with clear headings. A direct answer at the top of a section, then the detail and evidence, is good writing for someone in a hurry, not a format Google requires.
- Use structured data to confirm what is visible. Google says structured data must describe content visible on the page and is not required for generative AI search; there is no special schema.org markup to add. It helps machines read facts you already show; it does not get a page quoted.
Picture an electrician's page titled "How much does it cost to install a split system?" The commodity version lists the factors that affect price and says get a quote. The non-commodity version opens with the range the business charges and why, shows recent installs, and names the electrician who wrote it. Only the second gives an answer engine something to quote.
AEO myths and common mistakes
Much of what circulates about AEO is guesswork sold as method. Here is Google's own mythbusting list for its AI features, plus the mistakes we see most often.
- Myth: you need an llms.txt file or special AI files. Google says you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files, special markup or Markdown to appear in Google Search, including its AI features, because Search does not use them; in June 2026 it added that such files neither help nor hurt visibility. The crawler pages OpenAI, Perplexity and Anthropic publish do not mention llms.txt.
- Myth: content must be "chunked" into small pieces. Google says there is no requirement to break content into tiny pieces for AI, its systems understand several topics on one page, there is no ideal page length, and there is no need to write in a special way for AI.
- Mistake: a separate page for every fan-out query. Google says creating separate content for every variation of how people search, including fan-out queries, mainly to manipulate rankings or AI responses violates its scaled content abuse spam policy; in May 2026 it clarified that spam policies apply to generative AI responses too.
- Mistake: chasing mentions for their own sake. Google says seeking inauthentic mentions across the web is not as helpful as it might seem; its ranking systems focus on quality and its spam systems block the rest.
- Mistake: relying on FAQ markup for visibility. Google stopped showing the FAQ rich result in Search from 7 May 2026. An FAQ section still helps readers and can be quoted like any other text, but FAQPage markup is no longer a visibility shortcut in Google.
- Mistake: blocking the search bots while trying to be cited. A firewall rule, a host's bot protection or a copied robots.txt template can turn away OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Claude-SearchBot without anyone noticing, so check the live configuration, not just the file.
How to measure AEO
There are no rankings to watch, so measurement looks different. Only 9% of the B2B companies in our audit measure AI referrals, and another 42% see AI traffic in analytics but cannot separate it. Here is what can be measured, as of October 2026.
- Search Console. Google counts AI Overviews and AI Mode appearances inside the Performance report under the Web search type, and its 2026 guide points to a Generative AI performance report in Search Console. Google has moved inline links higher in AI Mode and AI Overviews, but Search Console still does not show which clicks come from AI results.
- Analytics. Google says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews are higher quality and recommends tracking conversions and time on site rather than clicks alone. Google Analytics has an AI Assistant channel for visits from tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot, while AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks count as Organic Search. Check tagging before reacting to a dip: a ChatGPT referral drop in GA4 in October 2026 appears to have been mostly a missing tracking tag, with the visits landing in Direct.
- A fixed question set. Write down the questions buyers ask before they call, keep the list the same, and once a month ask each one in Google, ChatGPT and Perplexity. Record which pages each answer quotes and how you are described. ChatGPT and Perplexity show citations you can open, so you can see who is quoted instead of you, and over a few months you get a share of voice against named competitors. Those are the measures behind our AEO reporting for UK businesses and our Australian programme.
- Server logs. Look for OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot, and for ChatGPT-User, Perplexity-User and Claude-User, which fetch a page when a real person asks about it. On our own site, 35% of 240,060 bot visits over 30 days came from AI crawlers.
Frequently asked questions
Can I stop Google using my content in AI Overviews?
The most direct option is the Search generative AI setting in Search Console, which excludes your site's links and content from AI Overviews and AI Mode without removing you from regular results. Snippet controls (nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet, noindex) also limit what Google shows. Google-Extended does not do this: it governs AI training and Gemini grounding, not whether you appear in Search.
How long does AEO take to work?
No engine publishes a timeline. Google says recrawling a page can take anywhere from several days to several months, and OpenAI says a robots.txt change takes about a day to reach ChatGPT search. Measure monthly and expect gradual movement.
Do I need an agency for AEO?
Not to start. The question list, the baseline, the crawler check and the first rewrites are all doable in-house. An agency earns its fee on monthly tracking across tools and the volume of rewriting, which is where most teams run out of time.
How to get started with AEO this month
- List 20 to 30 buyer questions from sales calls, enquiry forms and Search Console, favouring the ones asked just before someone decides: costs, comparisons and how a job is done.
- Ask them in Google, ChatGPT and Perplexity and note whether an AI answer appears, which pages it cites and where you stand. This is your baseline.
- Check access. Confirm Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot are allowed in robots.txt and in your firewall, CDN and hosting settings, and that your site is included in Search generative AI features in Search Console. Decide separately about GPTBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended.
- Fix the page that should answer each question. Put a plain answer at the top, follow it with first-hand evidence, name the author and update any fact that has drifted. Where no page exists, write one, and only one.
- Make your facts match everywhere. Business Profile, Merchant Center, directories and structured data should all agree with the page.
- Re-run the questions monthly against the baseline, note which pages gained or lost quotes, and let that decide next month's rewrites.
