Expert Link Building for Wellington Businesses
Wellington link building for firms that need credibility with government, creative and tech buyers. New Zealand's capital rewards brands that look authoritative, and relevant editorial links are the clearest signal to Google that a Wellington business deserves the top spot.
Real Mojo Dojo clients, on the record.
Building authority in the capital after the public sector cuts.
The region has the highest GDP per person in New Zealand, and its economy rests on three pillars: professional and technical services, public administration, and finance. For years a steady flow of government work kept many consultancies, caterers and CBD retailers busy. The 2024 public sector cuts changed that. An economist’s compilation reported by RNZ put the city’s job losses at 11.6% in a year, and many firms now need customers they have never had to find through search before.
That is where links come in. A policy advisory firm or an IT consultancy that used to win work on reputation now has to show the same credibility to strangers on Google. Citations from industry bodies, commentary in business media and mentions on partner sites carry that reputation onto the web, and they are the signals Google uses to decide who looks established.
Geography adds a second task. Harbour and hills split the region into separate catchments, and people search for Lower Hutt, Petone or Porirua by name. In 2025 Lower Hutt and Masterton grew while the city itself shrank, so a campaign aimed only at the CBD can miss where new customers live. We earn links for the pages that serve each catchment, from community news, local associations and regional event sites.
This work sits inside our broader SEO services. We pick the pages that should rank, compare them with the sites ahead of them, and earn editorial links through outreach, digital PR and useful content. No links are bought or sold.
Industries we help in Wellington.
The sectors that drive the capital-region economy, and how earned links help each one reach new customers.
Professional and policy advisory services
The region’s largest industry by GDP. Consultancies and law firms earn links through published research, submissions commentary and guides that trade bodies and business media cite.
Firms moving beyond government work
Suppliers that relied on public sector contracts need private clients. We build authority for their service pages so they appear to buyers who have never heard of them.
Finance and insurance
One of the three largest industries by regional GDP. Advisers and fintechs earn trust through compliant, data-led commentary placed with finance and business titles.
Screen, VFX and creative industries
Studios around Miramar sell to international clients. Portfolio features, festival coverage and industry directories with editorial standards carry authority well beyond New Zealand.
Technology and software
Digital firms compete for the same technical buyers. Original data, integration partner pages and conference talks earn links from tech media and developer communities.
Hospitality and events
Cafes, bars and venues time digital PR for Wellington On a Plate in August and WOW in spring, when food writers and what’s-on guides publish their lists.

The regional market in four numbers.
Figures from Stats NZ, Parliament and regional sources that shape how we plan link building for capital-region businesses.
How we earn links.
Six methods, weighted per client. A Thorndon advisory firm and a Petone brewery rarely need the same sources.
Digital PR
Data-led stories, expert commentary and campaigns pitched to journalists and editors, earning coverage and links from publications your customers read.
Editorial outreach
Personalised outreach to site owners and editors whose readers would genuinely benefit from your page, with a clear reason to link.
Linkable assets
Research, tools, guides and original data that other sites cite because there is nothing better to point to.
Unlinked mentions and broken links
We find sites that already mention your brand without linking, and dead links that your content can replace, then ask for the link.
Partnerships and industry bodies
Suppliers, associations, sponsors and events that publish member or partner pages, earned through real relationships.
Guest contributions with editorial standards
Expert articles on relevant publications where the link is earned by the quality of the piece, not by a payment.

What makes a link worth building.
Not all links help. We check every prospect against the same standards before we pitch it:
- Relevance. The site and the linking page cover a topic close to yours.
- Real audience. The site has genuine readers and visible organic traffic, not just a metric score.
- Editorial placement. The link sits inside useful content and was placed because an editor chose to.
- Indexed and crawlable. The page is in Google's index and the link is a standard link Google can follow.
- Clean neighbourhood. The site does not sell links openly or link out to spam.
- Natural anchor text. Descriptive and varied, never packed with keywords.
Third-party authority scores can help us sort prospects, but we treat them as a filter, not a target. A relevant link on a site your customers read beats a high score on a site nobody visits.
The parts of a link building engagement.
Scoped to your site, your competitors and the catchments you serve across the region. This is what the work includes.
Backlink profile audit. Where your links come from, which are helping, and which carry risk.
Competitor link gap analysis. The sites linking to the pages that outrank you and not to yours.
Target page selection. We prioritise the pages that carry revenue or leads, not just the homepage.
Prospect research. Hand-built lists of relevant sites, checked for traffic, topic fit and real editors.
Linkable asset planning. Ideas for content and data that give sites a reason to link.
Digital PR campaigns. Story angles, media lists and pitching for coverage on relevant publications.
Personalised outreach. Individually written emails and follow-ups, never mass templates.
Anchor text planning. Natural, varied anchors that describe the page instead of stuffing keywords.
Internal linking review. Passing the authority you earn to the pages that need it, working with SEO services.
Link quality checks. Every link reviewed for indexation, placement, attributes and neighbourhood.
Monthly reporting. Links earned, where they point, and the movement in rankings and organic traffic.
Clean-up recommendations. Advice on harmful links, disavow decisions and old paid link schemes.

Tactics we refuse to use.
Google's spam policies define link spam as creating links to or from a site primarily to manipulate search rankings. Its examples include buying or selling links for ranking purposes, excessive link exchanges, links made by automated programs, and large-scale guest posting with optimised anchor text. Those tactics can cost a site its rankings, and the damage is slow and expensive to reverse.
We do not use private blog networks, automated link tools, paid links that pass ranking credit, or link exchange schemes. Where a placement involves payment or sponsorship, it is marked with the appropriate rel attribute. If a site already carries links like these, we will tell you plainly and recommend how to deal with them.
This is the trade we make in your favour: fewer links, each one earned and defensible.
Areas we serve in Wellington.
We support businesses across the region remotely, over video calls with shared reporting. In the city that includes Wellington Central, Te Aro, Thorndon, Kelburn, Newtown, Kilbirnie, Miramar, Island Bay and Karori, and to the north Johnsonville, Khandallah and Tawa.
Beyond the city boundary we work with firms in Lower Hutt, Petone, Eastbourne and Upper Hutt, in Porirua, on the Kāpiti Coast around Paraparaumu, and in Masterton in the Wairarapa. Since searchers usually name the place they want, we point links at the pages built for each of those areas.
“Their team understood our business before we even had to explain it. Enquiries are up 250% and the quality is better than ever.”

Common link building questions.

What is link building?
Link building is the process of earning links from other websites to your own. Search engines treat relevant links from trusted sites as a signal that a page is worth ranking, so a structured link building programme supports rankings for the pages you care about.
Why do backlinks matter for SEO?
Links help search engines find your pages and judge how trusted they are. Content and technical health get a page into contention, and links from relevant, trusted sites often decide who wins a competitive result. Link building works best alongside your SEO services, not instead of it.
Do you work with Wellington businesses?
Yes. We work with businesses across the region remotely, with planning sessions and monthly reviews over video calls and a shared report that shows each link, the page it supports and the ranking change. Nobody needs to come to a meeting, and nothing is lost by working this way.
How long does link building take to work?
Expect months rather than weeks. Links have to be earned, published, crawled and then weighed by search engines, and the pages they point to have to be strong enough to benefit. We report links earned each month so you can see progress before rankings move.
Is it safe to buy backlinks?
Google's spam policies list buying or selling links for ranking purposes as link spam. Links that involve payment should carry a rel sponsored or nofollow attribute, which means they do not pass ranking credit. We earn links through outreach, digital PR and content, and do not buy links to pass ranking credit.
What is a good backlink?
A good backlink comes from a relevant site with a real audience, is placed inside useful editorial content by a real editor, sits on a page Google has indexed, and uses natural anchor text. One link like that is worth more than dozens from irrelevant directories or networks.
How many backlinks do I need?
There is no fixed number. The right target comes from the sites currently ranking for your keywords: how many relevant sites link to them, and which of those are missing from your profile. We build that comparison in the first phase and set targets from it.
What is the difference between link building and digital PR?
Digital PR is one way of building links. It earns coverage and links from journalists and publications through stories, data and commentary. Link building is the wider discipline and also includes editorial outreach, linkable assets, unlinked mention recovery, partnerships and resource page placements.
Do links still matter for AI search?
Links still shape traditional rankings, and reputable third-party coverage is also the kind of source AI answer engines tend to draw on. We cannot guarantee that any AI tool will cite you. Our AI SEO work looks at how your brand appears in those answers, and link building supports it by strengthening the sites and pages that mention you.
Do you guarantee rankings or a number of links?
No. Nobody controls how search engines rank pages, and a guaranteed number of links usually means links are being bought or manufactured. We commit to the process, the quality standards and the reporting, and we show the effect on rankings, traffic and enquiries.
How do you choose which pages to build links to?
We prioritise the pages closest to revenue or leads, such as service pages, product categories and high-intent content, and we look at where a modest amount of extra authority is enough to move a page onto page one. A few links go to the homepage and to linkable assets to keep the profile natural.
What if my site already has bad or paid links?
We start by auditing your existing profile and check for paid schemes, networks and irrelevant links. Most low-quality links can simply be ignored by Google. If there are signs of a paid link scheme or a penalty risk, we will recommend removal or disavow, and can pair the review with a full SEO audit.
How will I know it is working?
Each month you receive a report showing the links earned, the sites and pages they came from, where they point, and the movement in rankings, organic traffic and enquiries for the target pages. We tie the results to business outcomes rather than to a count of links.
We used to win work through government contacts. Can links help us find private clients?
Yes. Your expertise already exists, but search engines cannot see it unless other sites point to it. Commentary in business media, association listings and partner pages make that credibility visible, so your service pages can rank for the searches new private-sector buyers make.
Should we target the Hutt Valley and Porirua separately?
If you sell there, yes. People search by place name, and growth in 2025 was in Lower Hutt and Masterton rather than the city. Each area page needs its own links from community sites, local news and regional associations.
